Guided tours on skis in the Troll Peninsula of Iceland

Ski touring in Iceland

Troll Peninsula Iceland

Iceland is an incredible country. The contrast of colors of its glaciers with the volcanic lava and the blue of the sky and the water of its fjords at every little corner of the jagged coast leaves us breathless admiring the panorama.
Mid-April is the time when winter storms have passed and spring slowly arrives on the Troll Peninsula, in the North of Iceland. This is the best time for ski touring in this area. At night it is almost never dark and during the day the temperatures remain the same. This often makes perfect conditions for skiing on spring snow, even if the low temperatures at night sometimes give still powdery snow at every small precipitation. This area is very remote but in the small village of Ólafsfjörður where we will base we can find everything we need, including a small supermarket, a fish shop and a nice swiming pool with spa.

1st Week: from Sunday 11th of April – to Saturday 17th of April
2nd Week: from Sunday 18th of April – to Saturday 24th of April (ONLY IF THE FIRST WEEK WILL BE FULL OR FOR PRIVATE GROUPS)

2027 ski touring season will end also this year with our 5-stars program that will take us to extra-alpine destinations to visit the Troll Peninsula, located in the north of Iceland, just a few steps away from the Arctic Circle. This vast uncontaminated mountain area is a true paradise for ski touring.

Mountains rise directly from the sea and many of them exceed 1200 meters. The highest peak is Kerlinggarfjöll (1538 msl). The white mountains covered with powdery snow and the turquoise blue water of the sea imprisoned in the fjords create an incredible contrast and the panorama becomes more and more suggestive as you climb.

This program suits to all levels: skiers or telemarkers can take part to the group even at their first experience but with enough training and good downhill skills. In the proposed period, generally the quality of snow, as well as the quantity, are ideal and days with spring weather and light till late in the evening. This makes the snow pack normally well-settled and therefore safe from the avalanche danger and relatively easy to ski.

Day by day program Iceland Ski Touring:

Sunday: We will leave from Milan Malpensa with Easyjet flight at 7:30 am and arrives in Reykjavik at 9:55 am. From the international airport we will have a rental minivan or 2 cars ad we will reach in the early afternoon Akureyri. In Akureyri we will buy food and drinks for the week and then we will drive to Ólafsfjörður.

The journey to our accommodation in Ólafsfjörður last just over 1 hour, and takes place on the coast following the shoreline of the fjords, in splendid views between the black rock contrasting with the blue of the sea and the white of the snow.

Once we arrive at the house, after having settled in, we can rest and take a first walk in the village and a reconnaissance by car to the west of the peninsula where there are some of the most interesting ski tours.

Monday: Ski tour to Holaskarfjal 930 m or at the ski resort area of Sigulfjörður, towards the top of Hàkambar 847 m. Here we will study the snowpack together through a stratigraphic snow profile and a wedge stability test, in order to understand and prevent possible risks in the coming week. In the afternoon visit to the interesting Herring Museum.

Tuesday: Ski tour to Sannasar 985 m and afternoon for those who want a boat trip for Whale watching.

Wednesday: Ski tour to Kinsifjall 1078 above Ólafsfjörður and relax at the village spa pool.

Thursday: Ski tour to Saeggjabrakan 1027m and return safari loop from Dalvik.

Friday: Ski tour to Brattavellir 989 m.
