Tuscany Sailing & Climbing Course

Alagna Ski Guides activity doesn’t stop at the melting of snow but continues in other seasons, especially by exploring the northern seas and the Mediterranean islands in the most natural and ecological way possible. Our great passions, climbing and trekking, discovering the more secluded places of the Mediterranean that we reach with a sailing boat.

Monte Argentario is a promontory that extends into the Tyrrhenian Sea in front of the two southernmost islands of the Tuscan Archipelago; the Isola del Giglio and the Island of Giannutri.  Even the Argentario was born as an island, but over the centuries the joint action of the sea currents and the river Albegna has created two tomboli, the Tombolo della Giannella and the Tombolo della Feniglia, which have united the island to the mainland, forming at the same time the Orbetello Lagoon.

Living the Argentario adventure on a sailing boat is not only a different way to get there, it is the best way to appreciate the beauty and the nature of this incredible corner of the Mediterranean Sea.

The coast of Monte Argentario, very jagged, offers coves and beaches, mainly stony, of considerable beauty from the naturalistic point of view and in which to take a dip in the crystal clear water.

Our adventure will take off from the port of Cala Galera in Porto Ercole. This is a popular destination for VIPs who moor their yachts. At the seafront of Porto Ercole, in the first evening, we will enjoy a serene and relaxing atmosphere as well as tasty cuisine based on fresh fish in one of the characteristic restaurants with a terrace overlooking the sea.

From Porto Ercole we will leave to circumnavigate the peninsula and drop anchor near the two main cliffs equipped for sport climbing. The crossing to the island of Giglio and the island of Giannutri, where we will make naturalistic excursions and climbing, will be part of the program. The skipper will decide when according to the weather and sea conditions.

On the peninsula there are two main sectors equipped for sport climbing and several routes equipped with multi-pitch sports bolting on the panoramic Capo d’Uomo wall. The itinerary that runs entirely along the rocky ridge of Capo d’Uomo, called Spigolo Bonatti, is certainly suggestive and noteworthy.

In the following link you can find some of the climbing itinerary of Argentario:

We also offer other similar programs in different areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Please write to us to get more details if you like.

  • To improve the individual climbing technique from any starting level
  • To improve your knowledge of safety in sport climbing
  • To learn the basic of sailing

On top of the clothing of a normal summer holiday at the seaside, you should carry a light wind jacket, a light polar sweat shirt and a light sleeping bag. For climbing joggers and shorts. A soft bag or backpack is better than a trolley or hard bag. Remember to take with you your harness and climbing shoes (if you don’t have them let us know and we will provide).

Day by day Argentario sailing and climbing course

DAY 1
Meeting at the Airport. Transfer to the harbor of Cala Galera and accommodation on the boat.
The first night we will be moored in the port and in the evening there will be an opportunity for a first short lesson on safety rules and boat equipment. Dinner in a teverna and sleeping on the boat.

DAY 2
Breakfast on board, we check the individual climbing equipment, transfer to the shore, walk to the cliff Canne d’Organo for the first climbing day. In the afternoon on the way back to the boat a refreshing swim. Dinner and night on board.

DAY 3
After breakfast we sail the short distance to the second natural harbor. We will take advantage of this time to learn some basic rules of sailing. The second climbing day will be at Capo d’Uomo and we can put into practice the suggestions and advice obtained during the first day. In the evening a dive in the crystalline water of the bay and super dinner on board.

DAY 4
After a good breakfast on board we sail towards the island of Giannutri, a natural oasis with incredible scenery. Here, after having moored in one of the two beautiful bays with free access, Cala Maestra or Cala Spalmatoio, we will make an excursion to the center of the island. Upon returning to the boat, an aperitif and a tasty dinner will be waiting for us.

DAY 5
Today, always after a hearty breakfast, we will put the skipper’s teachings into practice in the beautiful crossing to the Giglio Island. Here, in addition to visiting the splendid place, we will have the opportunity to perfect our climbing technique on the numerous blocks distributed almost everywhere. A bouldering lesson will be a great opportunity to get to know this type of climbing too, without ropes and technical gear just a few centimeters from the ground, where technique and relax are the main ingredients.

DAY 6
Early breakfast and early start to reach again Argentario where in the afternoon we will have the opportunity to climb one of the multi-pitch routes of Capo d’Uomo, putting into practice the teachings of the week. Aperitif and dinner on the boat or in one of the restaurants in Porto Santo Stefano (optional).

DAY 7
Depending on the flight schedule we might have the chance to visit one of the two beautiful beaches of the Argentario at the Tombolo della Feniglia or at the Tombolo della Giannella. Later transfer to the airport.

The program will be updated every day by the guide and the skipper, with the group members, after knowing the expectations of everyone, the weather forecast and the sea conditions.
